THEY will never make to the Derby - but sheep are about to make their racing debut at one of the region’s leading shows.

For the first time sheep racing is being included at Countryside Live this weekend - an event billed as the Yorkshire Show’s little sister.

To get the sheep in their stride, show director Bill Cowling supervised a practice run for the woolly competitors at a special circuit set up at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.

“It will be great fun I’m sure, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the going will be good,” said Mr Cowling.

“Although there won’t be betting, I’m sure there will be plenty of cheering for the favourite.”

The sheep races, organised by members of the Yorkshire Young Farmers Clubs, will take place twice daily at Countryside Live on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19.
