A MAN has tonight (Sunday October 12) been charged with manslaughter over an incident in which a 21-year-old man died after he was hit by a taxi in York.

The fatal collision, at about 1.50am on Saturday in Haxby Road, occured after a violent brawl a short time earlier near the city's Nuffield Hospital.

A 20-year-old man has now been charged with manslaughter and is due to appear at York Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday October 13).

The victim, 21-year-old Sam Wilson, died at the scene from serious injuries despite efforts by paramedics to save him.

Detectives still need to urgently trace two men in connection with the incident, which led to the closure of Haxby Road for 12 hours. They have called on the pair to hand themselves in.

Detective Inspector Andrea Kell, of York CID, said: “I still need to speak to the two men who were at the scene of the incident. I urge anyone who can help us to trace them to contact the police straight away.”

A 16-year-old girl and 20-year-old woman, who were assisting the police, have now been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.

Anyone who can assist with the investigation should contact York CID on 101, select option 2 and ask for the department by name.
