A SUSPECT device found in a suburban garden earlier today has now been confirmed as a live hand grenade.

Army bomb disposal experts made the identification after arriving at the cordoned-off scene in Bishopthorpe, near York, this afternoon.

They have carefully removed the grenade from the scene and taken it away to be safely disposed of in a nearby field.

The device was first found at about 2.20pm today by workmen who unearthed it in a garden on MacLagan Road. Police immediately threw up a 100m cordon round the scene which is now being lifted.
