A TOURIST attraction’s search for a king or queen to reign over its summer show is over – after crowning its king without a sequin in sight.
York Dungeon was looking for its alternative version of the traditional carnival king or queen to reign over its summer sideshow, Carnivale – and found it in the form of 22-year-old Andy Harrison from Market Weighton.
People from all walks of life and all shapes and sizes were encouraged to apply.
Mr Harrison was selected by the dungeon’s own courtroom judge, who felt he perfectly represented the attraction and the fiendishly fun spirit they were looking for.
The York Dungeon’s summer stars, Ringmaster Walter and his wife, Madam Caroline were on hand to officially sash the new king in his royal attire and he was crowned on Yorkshire Day, August 1.
Mr Harrison said: “It’s absolutely amazing to be chosen as the king and be part of this exciting opportunity. When I first applied I wasn’t sure what my chances of winning were but thought it was worth a try anyway and I’m so glad it all paid off.”
The Carnivàle sideshow runs until September 1 and stars a cast of cheeky and colourful characters and attractions including the wheel of misfortune.
