TWO people were seriously injured tonight in a head-on crash between a car and a bus.

It happened on thje A19 at Tollerton, near York, at around 6pm, close to a petrol station.

Diversions are in place and the road is likely to remain closed for several hours while police investigate the scene and the wreckage is recovered.

The driver of the car, which was heading towards Thirsk, suffered serious head injuries and was tended by paramedics.

The bus driver had to be freed by firefighters and was taken by air ambulance to Leeds general Infirmary with serious injuries.

There were only three passengers on the bus and they were all unhurt. A mobile police office was set up at the scene to provide support and shelter for the stranded passengers.
