A DAD whose daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after falling ill on holiday is taking on the challenge of a lifetime to help fight the condition.

Dominic Shaw, 37, a quantity surveyor from Ruswarp, near Whitby, plans to run in April's Virgin Money London Marathon, raising money for Diabetes UK.

“It’s going to be quite a challenge. Although I’ve always enjoyed running, up until now I’ve never ran further than five miles," he said.

He was inspired following the shock diagnosis of his daughter Poppy almost four years ago, when she fell into a coma while holidaying in Turkey.

Just a baby at the time, she was in intensive care for three days and then in hospital for over a month as her family waited for her to recover.

Her dad wants to raise awareness of the symptoms so more children get a quick diagnosis and avoid becoming seriously ill. To sponsor him visit justgiving.com/fundraising/poppyshaw
