COMPLAINTS by locals and tourists have sparked a clampdown on on dog fouling in North Yorkshire resorts.

Several streets and public areas in Whitby and Scarborough will see dogs banned while in others tougher fines will be brought in on owners who fail to clear up after their pet.

The action, set to be approved next week, is being brought under a Public Space Protection Order.

Council director Nicholas Edwards said more than 300 people responded to a consultation on the plan, with a big majority backing the curbs.

For several years the council has banned dogs from being taken onto the key beaches in the resorts in the peak holiday season.
