CHANGES to the plans for the giant potash mine being built in the North York Moors National Park are set to get the green light, despite objections.

Sirius Minerals was given approval in October 2015 to develop what the company says will be the world's largest and highest grade deposit of polyhalite at Woodsmith Mine, near Whitby.

The company says its initial production capacity will be 10 million tonnes a year, and the venture will create some 2,500 jobs.

The company is asking for permission to make amendments to the scheme including re-designing of foreshafts and shaft construction methodology, alterations to building lay-out, construction, and shaft platform levels among other things.

It has told the park authority that the amendments to the scheme result from "the identification of more efficient construction techniques and the potential for other improvements to the layout and design of the development at the main mine-head site."

Natural England and the North Yorkshire Moors Association are among those that have objected but the park's planning team , which is recommending approval concluded the changes did not materially alter the strategic context of the development.
