SEASIDE visitors are getting the chance to discover the truth behind one of the most misunderstood creatures on the planet.

Scarborough Sea Life Centre is running daily beach talks on the North Bay in support of its Shark Weeks event from May 27 to June 11.

“There are a vast amount of incredible shark species that live within our local coastal waters and pose minimal threat to human life,” said curator Lyndsey Crawford-Darwell.

“Our plan is to take to the beach to give free and fun educational talks on some of the amazing things you can find right on your doorstep.”

The centre will also be discussing the importance of shark conservation and asking the public for support by signing their shark pledges.

Tens of millions of sharks are killed annually as by-catch or for shark fin soup and many species are on the brink of oblivion.

The centre’s daily beach talks are free to attend for all and will take place on the North Bay beach at 1.30pm.
