A ROBBER who was stopped by a have a go hero after threatening shop staff with a knife has been jailed for ten years.

Patrick Shannon, 35, admitted robbery at the One Stop shop in Scarborough in April. The court was told the drug recovery worker, who had moved back to Scarborough after living in York, went into the shop with two other men with white bandanas covering their faces. Shannon had a ten-inch carving knife and told a member of staff: “Hurry up, hurry up, I don’t want to use this, but I will stab you if I need to.”

They ran off with scratch cards, however Shannon was pursued by a member of the public who detained him until police arrived. His actions were applauded by the judge who awarded the man £750.

DC Steve Monty said: “The heavy prison sentence handed to Shannon reflects the gravity of the offence. We are grateful to the member of the public who bravely helped officers detain Shannon so justice was served.”
