INVESTIGATORS are still trying to establish the cause of two fires that severely damaged a popular Whitby fish and chip shop.

The Magpie Cafe was hit by fire twice in 24 hours over the bank holiday weekend, with firefighters first called to the premises at 10.15pm on Sunday and then again at 3.28pm the following day.

Crowds lined the clifftops to watch the drama unfurl as crews from six engines spent around three hours fighting the blaze on Monday afternoon.

The cafe was already closed due to Sunday night's fire, but the takeaway was open and had been busy earlier in the day.

Luckily nobody was hurt in either of the fires which caused considerable damage to the 17th century building's roof.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said today that they are investigating both fires separately.

A spokesman said: "Fire investigation officers are in attendance and have started a separate investigation into the cause of the second fire; the investigation will continue over the next few days.

"At this time, the cause of both fires is still to be determined."

Meanwhile, the team behind The Magpie Cafe, which is co-owned by Ian Robson and Alison McKenzie Slater, have taken to social media to thank their followers and nearby businesses for their support over the last couple of days.

A facebook post on Tuesday morning said that a fire crew remained on standby and the statement went on to thank the 'Magpie family', adding: "We'll work together and come back stronger than ever."

Another statement from The Magpie Cafe late on Monday night said: "It is safe to say it has been a very difficult and long day for Team Magpie.

"But we want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to send us your best wishes.

"We must also say a special thank you for the support of the businesses and residents in Pier Road as well as Harry and Julie at Harrys Lounge Bar & Brasserie.

"And of course we say a big thank you to all our staff.

"Updates will follow over the coming days and weeks but in the meantime, thank you all once again."

The Magpie has won legions of fans, including well-known food critics, thanks to the quality of its fish and chips.

It is commonplace to see queues forming along Pier Road in the height of the summer season for both the cafe and takeaway, but it is expected to be several weeks before either business is up and running again.
