TWO new Edwardian style shelters are being constructed for Whitby’s West Cliff, after the original Grade II shelters were destroyed in storms.

The work has been commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council to replace the damaged existing ones and should be in place by Easter.

They have been built by Whitby company, Rose Engineering and aim to replicate the original shelters as closely as possible.

The ward councillor with Scarborough Borough Council, Joe Plant, recently visited the company premises to see the build in progress.

He said: “The inclusion of impressive features, which will increase the shelters’ resistance to damage from any future severe weather, will ensure they will be around for many future generations to enjoy.

“Special thanks must go to the late Derek Green, conservation specialist, who worked closely with us on the detailed specification for the new shelters.

“I hope the end result will be a fitting tribute to the invaluable contribution he made to the project.

“I would also like to acknowledge the community groups that came forward with pictures and historical information about the original shelters and our council’s project engineer, who has managed the project from the beginning. I now look forward to seeing them take pride of place on West Cliff next month.”

The new shelters will incorporate some of the features salvaged from the original shelters, such as the decorative brackets, cast iron rosettes and seating.
