A NEW footbridge that will benefit pedestrians in Sandsend, near Whitby, has been lifted into place.

The footbridge at East Row will provide an alternative crossing, allowing pedestrians to avoid the narrow pavement on the existing road bridge.

Work by North Yorkshire County Council is expected to continue at the site for another couple of weeks to tie in the footbridge to the existing footpath before it will be ready for use by the public.

Executive member for highways Cllr Don Mackenzie said: “The new footbridge will address concerns about the safety of pedestrians, benefiting residents and visitors to Sandsend.

“This is something local residents and the parish council have been keen to see and we’re pleased to be able to install the bridge.”

The structure is made of fibre reinforced polymers, which are lightweight and strong. The bridge requires only low maintenance and is designed for a long life.

The main contractor for the work was Hall Construction Services Limited and the local sub-contractor was Wilf Noble Construction & Plant Hire Limited.
