VISITORS to the North Yorkshire coast will next month be treated to a visual feast of art works and installations.

Exhibitions by local and visiting artists, installations and open studios feature all over Scarborough when the Coastival festival runs over the weekend of February 18 and 19.

And the artists are fulfilling the chosen theme for this year – “the unexpected” -by coming up with imaginative and surprising artwork in unusual locations.

A highlight will be one of the new the pieces specially-commissioned for this year’s festival. “Sea (Glass)” is a new animated light sculpture, created from pieces of glass washed up on local beaches and on display in the Spa Sun Court. The same artist, Stuart Langley, is also bringing his sculpture "Planet" to Coastival weekend, to be featured at the front of the Spa.

Other highlights will include film, photography, sculpture, drawing and poetry by various artists and on show at Woodend, the Spa, the Stephen Joseph Theatre and Crescent Arts, throughout the weekend from 10am to 5pm.

‘Beyond the Descriptive’ will be a display at Woodend featuring 3D objects, made from unusual materials and reflecting literary figures who were limited by circumstances and beliefs or frozen in time or kidnapped.

Altogether this year Coastival will feature 110 events, the majority of them free, in 32 venues.
