WORK is set to start to replace grade II listed Edwardian shelters on Whitby’s West Cliff which were destroyed in storms last year.

Scarborough Borough Council has been granted listed building consent to replace the ornate structures and has developed a design which will replicate the historic shelters as closely as possible.

The shelters will incorporate some of the original salvaged features, such as the decorative brackets, cast iron rosettes and timber seating.

They will be further enhanced with replacement ornate ironwork to match the shelters’ original appearance.

The design also includes features which will increase the shelters’ resistance to damage from future severe weather and the structures will be secured to concrete plinths.

Local Whitby company, Rose Engineering, will carry out the construction of the shelters off site before craning them into place on West Cliff in time for the Easter holiday in April.

West Cliff ward councillor Joe Plant said: “Many residents and visitors to Whitby were understandably upset by the sight of the ruined shelters at the start of last winter, so I am delighted that we have been able to secure permission and the necessary funds to replace them and local expertise will be used to construct them.”
