THOUSANDS of visitors have braved high winds at a seaside resort to take part in a festival dedicated to non-conformity and diversity.

Organisers of the 22nd biannual Whitby Goth Weekend, which featured music acts including Heaven 17, The Mission and Skeletal Family, said tickets for the event sold out while residents reported crowds of visitors, dressed in black ensembles, corsets and masks, parading along the town’s lanes.

Among the most popular attractions were the Bizarre Bazaar, featuring about 100 stalls, and a football match at Whitby Town FC, where Whitby-based all-goth team Real Gothic FC took on Stokoemotiv Whitby FC to raise funds for the Willow Foundation, SOS Children’s Villages, Whitby RNLI and Foodbank 4 Whitby.

The event also included the Alternative Model Of The Year competition, where goths were offered the chance to break into modelling and saw David and Jools Winter, of Robin Hood’s Bay, getting married before fellow goths and family members at Whitby Registry Office.

It has been estimated the weekend generates £1m in revenue for local traders, providing a huge off-season boost.
