ELDERLY people across North Yorkshire have been targeted in a series of “despicable” distraction burglaries.
Two men have been knocking on doors claiming their ball has been kicked into the victim’s back garden.
Then when the home owner takes one of the men to get the ball, the other man searches the house and steals cash and jewellery.
The first raids happened on August 1 at two properties in Filey, two in Scagglethorpe near Malton and two in Boroughbridge. On August 3 similar raids took place at properties in Scarborough, Great Ayton and Whitby.
Detective Constable Sam Harding said: “The offenders who are committing these despicable crimes are targeting those who are most vulnerable in our communities, tricking their way into their homes and stealing their valuable property.
“We want to encourage elderly residents across North Yorkshire to be vigilant against this type of crime.”
Anyone with information should contact 101, select option two and speak to DC Sam Harding or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
