THE HISTORIC fishing village of Staithes in the North York Moors is preparing for its fifth annual Festival of Arts and Heritage.

More than 100 artists will exhibit their painting, prints, sculpture, jewellery, glass and crafts for sale in pop-up galleries all around the village, near Whitby, from Saturday, September 10 to Sunday, September 11.

Roaming the alleys and ginnels, visitors will be entertained by an assortment of musicians including a performance of songs of the sea from the Men of Staithes, and concerts throughout the weekend.

After dark, an outdoor cinema will show images and film footage of the village’s rich past - with live piano accompaniment. On the beach, light artist Mick Stephenson wants help to create the biggest and best glow stick installation in the world.

There will also be informative talks, workshops to have a go at crafts, and lots of pop-up tearooms, cafes and restaurants.

Staithes Festival is supported by the North York Moors National Park and the Coastal Communities Fund. Visit www.staithesfestival.com.
