TWO young boys were rescued from the sea today after drifting almost a mile from shore whilst out kayaking.

A team of RNLI lifeguards who were training on Scarborough beach realised the boys were in trouble and used paddleboards to reach the pair.

Scarborough RNLI's inshore lifeboat was called to the scene and brought the boys, aged 7 and 8, safely back to dry land and their waiting parents.

"The wind had got them and they were nearly a mile out by the time we got there," said helmsman Craig Burnett, who was joined by Matt Rawlings and Rob Gaunt in the rescue.

"Just because the sea is flat and the sun is in the sky it doesn’t mean the sea is safe, especially when there’s a strong offshore wind."
