MOTORISTS are being warned of overnight road closures as work progresses on a £9million coastal stabilisation scheme.

The work is to protect the main A174 route between Whitby and Sandsend and installation of the 450 pre-cast concrete stepped revetment units that will form the sea defence on the beach is almost complete.

Contractor Balfour Beatty is about to start disassembling the crane used to lift the units into place and removing it and its platform from the site.

And that will require the closure of Sandsend Road overnight on Monday to Friday between 9pm and 5.30am, starting on March 7 for up to two weeks.

Advance warning of the closure and diversions will be signposted. Pedestrians will be allowed access whenever it is safe to do so.

The county’s executive member for highways, Cllr Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Highways, said: “We appreciate that this closure will cause inconvenience and if there is any opportunity to keep the road open during the two-week period we will do so.

“This is a major tourist route, so it is good news for both the local and business community that the project is nearing completion.”

The project is expected to be completed in April.
