THE famous swing bridge at Whitby is to be temporarily closed to all pedestrians and vehicles in order to upgrade the control system.

The closure will take place between 6am on Monday, January 25, until 6am next Wednesday, January 27.

The planned works are an essential upgrade of the control system panels which bridge operators use to swing the bridge.

The upgrade is necessary so that the control system complies with current electrical standards. It is also part of the on-going maintenance to protect the bridge’s longevity.

In order to carry out the work - decommission the control system panel and replace with new ones - the bridge will remain in the open position to allow river traffic through until the work is complete.

A signed diversion route for vehicles will be in place and a free bus service will operate. Pick-up points will be from the bus station on the west side and drop off outside Mr Chips on the east side. This will run in both directions.
