THE latest arrivals at one of North Yorkshire’s leading attractions could never be described as cute.

For one week only visitors to the Scarborough Sea Life Centre will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with some of the world’s most feared predators.

Daisy the American alligator and John the reticulated python are among the creatures set to take centre stage at the new Face Your Fears event running from October 26 to November 1.

“We are thrilled to be able to give our guests the opportunity to get closer than ever before to these amazing creatures in a safe and controlled environment,” said aquarist Jordan Woodhead.

“American alligators are native to south eastern America and can grow to more than four metres long so this really is a one of kind chance to come close to Daisy who is currently still a juvenile.

“In the wild American alligators are facing conservation challenges due to the growing popularity of skinned goods such as boots and handbags.”

He added: “We are privileged to have Daisy as the perfect ambassador to help educate the public about the dangers surrounding these incredible creatures.”

Common perception is such creatures pose a dangerous threat to humans but over the half-term event the centre will highlight the horrors that pollution, habitat loss and other human follies are inflicting on the natural world.

“Face Your Fears aims to inspire and educate guests about conservation issues surrounding amazing creatures throughout the globe,” said Jordan.

“A specially designed reptile den will be accessible throughout the day for guests to come and view the creatures, and twice daily we will be giving a talk and handling demonstration for adult guests wishing to hold commonly feared creatures such as tarantulas”.
