THE NATIONAL president of the Geological Society will be leading a lecture looking at why potash – “Yorkshire Gold” - is so globally important.

The lecture, by Professor David Manning, will be held in Scarborough months after permission was granted for Sirius Minerals to start work on its £1.7bn potash mine underneath the North York Moors National Park and coast.

The lecture will look at why the potassium-rich mineral polyhalite was described by Sirius as the fertiliser of the future and is believed to be such a potent weapon in the war on world hunger.

Professor Manning is the president of the 208-year-old Geological Society of London, which has 10,000 members worldwide. He is also professor of soil science at Newcastle University.

Yorkshire Gold will be held at Scarborough Library from 6.30pm on Friday, October 16. Admission is free, and the talk is aimed at a general audience.
