THOUSANDS of visitors flocked to the coast at the weekend to enjoy a wealth of activities for the 175th Whitby Regatta.

The Esk river mouth shone as traditional competitions including bonny baby and glamorous granny took place at the Whitby Pavilion, where visitors also had a good view of the rowing races.

There was also a fancy dress parade with floats, a huge variety of events, and stalls on the town’s West Cliff.

This year also saw a new market on Archery Green, which proved to be a popular addition with the hope it will return next year.

The Fusco family served up their famous fish and chips while bands and live music entertained the crowds.

Hundreds of spectators lined the piers to watch the raft races and greasy pole competition, and the rowing clubs battled it out for the prize-giving on Monday night.

The regatta gave residents and tourists four days of entertainment, including yacht racing, rowing races and various free forms of entertainment finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display.

After 175 years of aquatic competition and entertainment, the Whitby Regatta is the oldest sea regatta on the North-East coast and has drawn large crowds into the town over the years.
