A YOUTH Hostel in one of Britain's best locations is being reopened after a £1.2m refurbishment.

Over 50 children from a local school, dressed appropriately as pirates will do the honours of reopening the Hostel at Boggle Hole, near Robin Hood's Bay, on Monday June 22.

The 85 bed hostel is run by managers Peta and Andy Nugent who have been at the centre for 23 years, welcoming thousands of visitors every year.

Parts of the building had become increasingly run down and it closed for eight months for the revamp which has created 12 new jobs and assured the hostel's future thanks to money from the Coastal Community fund, Hostelling International and dedicated members.

Mrs Nugent said: “Boggle Hole is one of the oldest, and most loved YHAs in the UK. Its rich history of mystery and adventure reveal legendary stories of smugglers landing their treasure and burying it in the hundreds of hidey-holes in the bay, it is a truly magical place.”

Caroline White, Chief Executive of the Hostelling Association said: “YHA Boggle Hole is simply stunning and epitomises the image change YHA has undergone in recent years, making it appeal to a new generation of young people and their families.

“We welcome thousands of young people to Boggle Hole every year giving everyone, whatever their backgrounds, the chance to enjoy a fantastic educational and outdoor experience.”

The centre is named after the Boggle, the local name for a hobgoblin.
