POLICE are investigating an armed robbery in Whitby, which happened as crowds gathered in the town to watch the Tour de Yorkshire.
At about 12.30pm on Friday, May 1, a man entered Gouldbuy jewellers on Flowergate and threatened staff with what was reported to be a gun. He then left with some gold jewellery and headed towards Silver Street and Belle Vue Terrace where he got into a small grey or blue hatchback car.
North Yorkshire Police say there were no reports of injuries but staff at the store “were, naturally, very shaken up by what happened”.
Enquiries are continuing into the robbery and as part of those enquiries, officers are appealing for information.
The incident happened as crowds of spectators were in the coastal town to cheer on cyclists taking part in stage one of the Tour de Yorkshire race.
Any witnesses should call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and pass information to the force control room.
If you wish to remain anonymous, you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 200 of 1 May 2015.
