A SECTION of the Cleveland Way has been redirected after a section of cliff collapsed, taking part of the pathway with it.

The cliff-fall near Whitby, not far from the former lighthouse, Whitby High Light, was reported on Wednesday afternoon (October 1) by walkers who came across the damage.

The coastal landslip was said to involve a significant amount of cliff-fall by Humber Coastguard.

It also affected a 12 metre stretch of the Cleveland Way National Trail near Saltwick Nab.

About 2.5 metres of the path was lost and the landowner and staff with the North York Moors National Park Authority spent today at the scene (Thursday, October 2) working to make the path safe again. They worked quickly to re-route the section of the popular walk by the end of the morning, setting it further back from the new cliff edge.

Malcolm Hodgson, the Cleveland Way national trails officer said: “It’s been re-opened really quickly, thanks to the help and efforts of the coastguard, who first secured the scene, and the local landowner, who has allowed us to set the path back and make it safe again.

“There’s also been great work by national park rangers and maintenance staff to re-open the path so quickly.”
