TWO young boys have been rescued after getting into difficulties in the sea by the pier at Whitby.

RNLI lifeguard Megan Ellis was patrolling the beach when she spotted a child struggling in a deep pool of water at about 11am on Thursday, August 23.

She dashed to the scene and waded into the water. On entering the pool she discovered that the boy had slipped under the surface but she quickly grabbed him and lifted him out of danger.

However while she was recovering the child, a second young boy entered the water and again the lifeguard plucked him to safety.

Both youngsters were then re-united with their parents after being given the all-clear following a casualty care assessment.

The pool, which is prone to rip currents, has been formed by water running down the pier wall and the area is being closely monitored by lifeguards.

Earlier in the week, on Monday, the charity’s lifeguards at Whitby also reunited a 17-year-old autistic boy with his mum after she approached the team for help.

The teenager was bodyboarding but was being pulled away by the strong current.

RNLI lifeguards Chris Ireland waded into the sea with his rescue board and brought the boy back to the safety of the beach.

He and fellow lifeguard Mia Hall then stabilised the boy until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital for further treatment.

Lifeguard supervisor Pat Messruther said: “The team at Whitby has demonstrated seamless teamwork this week and their extensive first aid and rescue training enabled them to help the boys quickly and effectively.

“We would always advise anyone planning a visit to the beach to chat to the lifeguards first for advice about any potential hazards, tide times and the safe areas in which to swim.”
