A DALTON company is on the shortlist to benefit from the planned expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Thirsk MP Kevin Hollinrake said he has been told that the Dalton-based structural steel company Severfield has been shortlisted as a possible logistics hub where component parts would be assembled for transport to Heathrow.

At a briefing in Parliament hosted by Mr Hollinrake, it emerged that the airport expansion would bring up to £12 billion in economic benefits to Yorkshire.

The briefing heard that 60 per cent of the supply chain for the work will be outside of London and the South East, and could create over 11,000 jobs for the Yorkshire region.

Commenting on Severfield making the shortlist, Mr Hollinrake said: “It would be fantastic if they are successful as this would mean more jobs directly in the Thirsk area.”

Mr Hollinrake added that the expansion was “welcome news” for the region, with other knock-on benefits such as the new runway potentially serving the area by connecting flights from Leeds-Bradford airport.
