Land Art:

Land Art at the Old School Building next to Mercury House

• This is being done by RDC council officers; it’s based on the drummer boy legend…..in the 18th century some soldiers discovered an opening under the keep of Richmond castle – as they were too large to crawl into it they selected one of the smaller drummer boys who was told to walk along the passage beating his drum so they would follow his course above land. It led them from the castle towards the river and along to easby – but the drumming stopped around Easby Wood. The spot is marked with the ‘drummer boy stone’ – the drummer boy was never seen again and the mystery never solved. The land art will be on the playground of the old school building next to Mercury House (the council hq is based in the old grammar school buildings); it will be mapped out on tarpaulin and then pinned to the playground.

Richmond Castle Land Art

• The land art comprises a detail from the Bayeux Tapestry, so chosen to highlight Richmond Castle's Norman history. The piece has been designed and implemented by Richmond-born and nationally acclaimed artist, Ed Kluz. Ed Kluz is an artist, illustrator and printmaker. His work explores contemporary perceptions of the past through the re-imagining of historic landscapes, buildings and objects. The ideas of early Romanticism, the Picturesque movement and antiquarian representations of topography and architecture underpin his approach to image making. He has a particular interest in the eccentric, uncanny and overlooked – follies, lost country houses and ruins provide a constant source of inspiration.

The design is inspired by the wounded service personnel and veterans who take part in Help for Heroes cycling challenges riding recumbent bikes.

Land Art

Bedale High School has produced Land art as part of the Tour de Yorkshire celebrations with a twist. They aim to present three of the four pieces on the local beck floating. Bedale High School students were presented with the competition by Art teacher Miss Allsop and the judging took place by the Bedale town committee whom judged all the entries and selected the following winners. All entries are winners and are being displayed in a local shop for an exhibition during the Tour.

There is also have a wall hanging being displayed on a local building which will hang around a building as the race zooms passed.

Floating Land Art designs

1) Year 7 Hettie Kimberley created a cyclist in a landscape. Hettie summarises her design by stating the following " It incorporates the Yorkshire rose to celebrate the location of the event. In my background you can see workers outside a factory, farmers working the land and people playing cricket on the village green to display just some well known aspects of Yorkshire life". The white cyclist zooms through the country scene on a bike made up of a Yorkshire rose for the front tyre. The winning design was created using ICT software and is featured in the local shop Nickery Nook on Bedale high street.

2) A simplistic yet effective design featuring bikers over cogs and tractor tyres, form the basis of the design. The farming community is strong and rife in Bedale so she wanted to incorporate this into her design idea. A minimal colour palette makes it a striking design from above. 12 year old Polly Stones and her mum Alison painted her winning design over the Easter holidays at Bedale High School.

3) 13 year old Georgia Beans winning design of a familiar cow featuring cogs and a Yorkshire rose as nostrils is brought to life on a fantastic design floating down Bedale beck. An iconic red tea pot is balancing on top of the cows head. The design was also created with the others during the Easter holidays in Bedale High School using donations of paint and bed sheets from our local community donations.

Wall art:

4) 12 year old Lois Walmsley's design of pouring cogs, bicycle wheels and roses from a red tea pot enhances the wall of a local pub on a corner. The tea pot design is linked to our floating land art because Lois wanted the teapot to pour objects and link to the flowing water theme.
