TRACTORS big and small went on parade to launch the UK's biggest celebration of the mechanical workhorses.

The mayor of Ripon, Cllr Pauline McHardy, and the city's hornblower, Allison Clark, inspected the vehicles before watching them depart on a tour of local villages.

The engines paraded through Ripon and surrounding villages including Littlethorpe, Roecliffe and Bishop Monkton.

Tractor Fest takes place at Newby Hall, near Ripon, over the weekend of June 9 and 10. It is the biggest event of its type in the country, attracting thousands each year, and is staged by the Yorkshire Vintage Association.

This year’s event, sponsored by agricultural and machinery auctioneers Cheffins, will celebrate 100 years of John Deere tractors.

It will also showcase more than 1,500 engines of all marques including stationary engines, very early marques and oddball and orphan tractors.
