A CHEF whose North Yorkshire restaurant has been called the best in the world is opening a new venue.

The Black Swan at Oldstead, near Thirsk, was named the world’s best rated restaurant in the annual TripAdvisor awards in October last year, and was the first British venue to achieve the honour.

And head chef Tommy Banks is one of the fast rising stars of the culinary world, having won a Michelin star, at the age of 24.

No firm opening date for the York venue - to be called Roots - has been announced, and the exact location also remains under wraps at the moment.

However a statement on the Black Swan's website said: "Roots will offer casual and playful sharing dishes with the same focus on quality cooking that Tommy has become so famous for."

Mr Bank told the industry website The Caterer: “This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, it’s just been about the right time and place.
