A NEW monthly ‘Memory Cafe’ is launching in Thirsk next week to support people who are living with dementia.

The event, which is run by Thirsk Community Care and Home Instead Senior Care, is designed to offer a safe and relaxed social gathering place for local people living with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s, or other dementia.

Family, friends and carers will also be welcome at the cafe, which will offer a light lunch and refreshments, as well as a range of activities, support and advice from trained staff and volunteers.

Carers will also be offered peer support and advice.

Tina Chamberlain, acting chief officer at Thirsk Community Care said: “We are excited to launch a Memory Cafe here in Thirsk to support so many people here in our community who live with dementia.

“This will be a fantastic place for those who live with dementia and their caregivers to meet, have fun and relax.”

The Memory Cafe is a pilot project being funded by Hambleton District Council and North Yorkshire County Council’s Stronger Communities.

It launches on March 15 at East Thirsk Community Hall and will take place on the third Thursday of each month between noon and 2pm.
