A VILLAGE primary school has been given a rare ‘outstanding’ rating by Ofsted – the first school in North Yorkshire to be given the ranking since 2015.

Knayton C of E Primary School in Knayton, near Thirsk, was rated ‘good’ five years ago, and earlier this month the results of its most recent inspection were published, giving it ‘outstanding’ in all areas.

The school, which has 136 pupils, was praised for its leadership, ‘Big Ideas’ curriculum, and ‘vibrant learning culture’ following the two-day visit by inspectors.

Head teacher, Nikkie Beniams said: “I am so proud to be part of Team Knayton.

“We have all worked incredibly hard and I am delighted it has paid off. Our children are happy and astound us every day with what they can achieve. I am grateful for the support from our fantastic staff, parents and governors.”

Mrs Beniams said she believes the secret to Knayton’s success is putting relationships with the children at the centre of all that the school does, and that safe and happy children are the foundation for building excellence.

The inspection report said Mrs Beniams has “instilled a culture of high expectations that is shared by all teachers and governors”.

“All staff are dedicated to achieving the highest academic outcomes and standards of care for all pupils,” the report said.

“Leaders have developed a vibrant learning culture that engages pupils’ interests and curiosity, while enabling them to pursue subjects in genuine depth.

“As a result of thorough planning, innovative teaching and purposeful assessment, pupils are actively engaged in their learning and make outstanding progress.”

The school said Ofsted has not awarded an outstanding rating in North Yorkshire since 2015.

Chair of governors, Richard Morrice said: “It’s been the ambition of the school to achieve this status for a good number of years. I’m thrilled that the endeavours of the staff, who consistently give above and beyond, have now been recognised.”

This award comes off the back of a SIAMS report (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) earlier this year which also gave the school outstanding in all areas.

Mrs Beniams said: “Staff and pupils have started the new school year more motivated than ever.”
