THIRSK MP Kevin Hollinrake managed to swap the halls of Westminster for a short visit to the Great Yorkshire Show where he said that famers’ fears over Brexit were “quite understandable”.

Mr Hollinrake’s rural North Yorkshire constituency is hugely reliant on agriculture and food production but as he accompanied Michael Gove around the show he said that people appeared to be feeling reassured by the Government’s commitment to the industry during Brexit negotiations.

He said: “You could see that people were so excited that he (Mr Gove) is here and see the fact that he was well-received.

“He is so keen to engage and listen to people’s concerns about the future.

“Here of course you meet people from all kinds of different sectors of the economy, whether it be famers, food producers and lots of small businesses so it is a great occasion and a great opportunity for people to express their views.”

Mr Hollinrake said that some people in the farming industry were worried that it would become a “sacrificial lamb” in terms of Brexit negotiations but he believes Mr Gove is “absolutely the right person” to speak up for the industry.

He added: “It is quite understandable the main issues for farmers, food producers and retailers is that we get a good trade deal with no tariffs and a good domestic agricultural policy and a good domestic fishing policy too.

“I think we have got the right people in charge to help make sure that we deliver on these key objectives.”
