HUNDREDS of female cyclists are set to take to the roads in a sportive with a distinctly Yorkshire flavour.

The event, organised by Yorkshire Lass Cycling Club, follows the success of last year’s inaugural sportive which saw 300 cyclists taking part and raised more than£14,500 for women’s cancer charities.

The sportive will follow the same format as 2016, starting from Carlton Lodge Activity centre in Thirsk and offering rides to suit different abilities.

The three levels of difficulty start with a 30-mile ‘Cuppa tea an a piece a cake’ ride; a 60-mile ‘Reet Gud Ride’; and a 103-mile ‘By Eck Tha War Ard Ride’.

All riders will be rewarded for their efforts with a medal, a piece of cake and that all-important cup of Yorkshire tea.

Thirsk resident Judith Worrall, who helped form the Wetherby-based Yorkshire Lass Cycling Club in 2015, is looking forward to welcoming new riders at the sportive.

She said: “Last year’s event surpassed our expectations with a fantastic turnout of female cyclists in Yorkshire as well as many travelling from all over the country, plus a staggering amount raised for charities which are close to our heart.

“Our fun and friendly members will once again be making the day special with lots of help and encouragement for those taking part as well as providing plenty of refreshments along the routes plus that well-earned cake after the finish line.”

There are already more than 380 signed up for the sportive on August 20 and entries are open until August 1.

The event is again being held in aid of several women’s cancer charities and will also raise funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Carlton Lodge Activity Centre which hosts the event.

All Terrain Cycles, which has shops in Wetherby and Saltaire is the main sponsor and other local businesses have lent their support and sponsorship.
