THREE neglected dogs found abandoned on the side of the A66 have had the happy ending they deserve after all have been rehomed.

Two beagles, Lily and Blossom, and a pug, called Ralph, were discovered by a farmer on the busy trunk road between Gilling West and Hartforth in North Yorkshire in September last year.

The dogs had no identification and were taken by a Richmondshire dog warden to a rescue centre where they have been nurtured back to health.

Tracey O’Connell, deputy manager at Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Thirsk, said: “It’s heartbreaking to see dogs like this come to us.”

Ralph was nearly blind in one eye and has limited sight in the other, while both beagles were underweight, and showed signs of having multiple litters.

The trio are now in the care of their new families, with Lily and Blossom being re-homed together and Ralph finding a separate home.

Ms O'Connell added: “Most of the dogs that come to us are stray, or come to us from people who cannot care for their dogs anymore, or from elderly people who are moving into care homes. It’s heartbreaking because when they need their dogs the most, they have to give them up.”
