THE first full-sized orchestra in Thirsk has called on residents to show their support, ahead of a concert showcasing their repertoire.
The self-funded Thirsk Sinfonia, which has attracted about 50 musicians since it was launched last September, will perform Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and Haydn’s London Symphony 104 and Cello Concerto, featuring Toby White, at St Oswald’s Church, Sowerby, at 7.30pm on Saturday. Entry costs £12.50 on the door.
The orchestra, most of whom are professional musicians, is urging players of a range of abililties to join.
Led by acclaimed conductor George Morton, the orchestra only meets for rehearsals before upcoming concerts.
An orchestra spokeswoman said: “There’s a lot of musicians in Yorkshire, but not a huge number in the Thirsk area have heard of us.”
