A NORTH Yorkshire pupil is the fastest 14-year-old 100m and 200m sprinter in the country, following a contest this week.

Edward Lake broke a ten-year-old 200m record when he took part in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Northern Championships in Wigan on Wednesday, May 18. He also won the 100m sprint race, making him the fastest 14-year-old in the country.

He has now qualified for the national finals in Birmingham on June 29 where he will represent the North of England.

Edward, a student at Queen Ethelburga’s College near Boroughbridge, is on the school’s elite athletics programme. His sprint coach, Karen Buck, oversees his training at school and at York Athletic Club.

The Thirsk student recently took part in the Yorkshire Track and field Championships in Cudworth, West Yorkshire competing in the Under-17 mens’ races. He ran a personal best of 22.61 seconds in the 200m to gain a silver medal and ran another personal best of 11.39 seconds in the 100m to gain a bronze medal.

Edward is due to take part in the English Schools Athletic Association Championships held at Gateshead on July 9 and 10, where he will represent North Yorkshire.
