AN MP has praised the development of a charity after touring its base to view the spectrum of support it offers to young people across North Yorkshire.

Thirsk and Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake described The Clock as a "marvellous organisation" after seeing activities such as the Little Hands Youth Club for year groups 5 and 6, and intensive one to one support being offered to the vulnerable.

Other projects demonstrated to Mr Hollinrake included a furniture donation scheme, a food bank, first aid training, a girls' fitness class and another supporting adults who are affected by rural isolation.

He also prepared pizzas with Ben Smith, 13, who won the Hambleton Young Citizen of the Year Award after receiving support from The Clock.

Abigail Homer, chief officer of The Clock, which was launched in 2003 as a Thirsk-based youth centre, said the charity had wanted to show the MP about services it had introduced, such as youth clubs for primary school-age children.

Mr Hollinrake, who is a trustee of the charity, said: “We all go through difficult times in our lives and The Clock provides an invaluable service in helping people get back on their feet, providing advice and guidance and developing life and workplace skills.

"I am always impressed by the range of activities on offer and by the huge geographical coverage of the take up of their services. The Clock is an absolute credit to the town and the enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment of the team is wonderful to see.”
