A MUSEUM dedicated to the life and work of the author of the James Herriot novels has attracted more than a 1,000 visitors in a weekend after throwing open its doors to local residents.

Managers of The World of James Herriot said the initiative had proved popular with visitors during the event last weekend. Hambleton residents were offered free admission to the attraction in Kirkgate, Thirsk for two days as part of an ongoing drive to develop the museum and boost visitor numbers.

The centre's manager, Kate Pawlett, said: “Not only did we have people coming through to look around the recreated 1940s home but many came especially to see the latest addition to the centre – a life size bronze statue of Alf Wight, set in the garden of the attraction. We were literally rushed off our feet.”

The event follows speculation last year that major US television show producer HBO was considering remaking the All Creatures Great and Small series, and was lining up actors including Hugh Laurie, Sarah Jessica Parker and Dominic West to take the lead roles.
