TWO holiday coaches carrying dozens of passengers crashed on the A19 near Thirsk on Sunday.

The two single-decker coaches collided near Thirkleby, south of Thirsk in North Yorkshire at about 10am this morning. None of the passengers are believed to have been seriously injured, but three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The A19 was closed between Sessay and Tollerton and emergency crews including ambulances, police and fire and rescue vehicles attended the scene.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service sent crews from Thirsk, Easingwold and Ripon to the accident scene, where they freed trapped passengers.

One person was taken to York Hospital with wrist and neck injuries, while another two passengers were transported to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

It is believed the coaches, carrying about 50 passengers, were from County Durham and were travelling in the same direction, towards York, when the accident happened.

Police said the A19 reopened at about 2.30pm.
