BURGLARS have stolen First World War medals earned by a man who went on to produce a popular brand of flour.
North Yorkshire Police said two medals inscribed Hugh Mortimer Lister, a military swagger stick - which were carried by non-commissioned officers when off duty - and a silver-coloured candle snuffer, were taken during a break-in at an empty house in Station Road, Topcliffe, near Thirsk.
Detectives said they wanted to hear from anyone who has been offered any of the items for sale and that the burglary could have taken place any time between June 1 and August 5.
Mr Lister, who died aged 70 in 1964, and his family ran a mill on the banks of the River Swale in the village, which produced White Horse Flour.
