A NEW cookbook to help those on a tight budget has been produced by Hambleton FoodShare - which provides emergency food parcels for people who would otherwise go hungry.

Called “Cook Smart” it has been designed to enable families or students who are struggling to feed themselves produce healthy food at affordable prices.

It also has a guide on how to store food to keep it fresh, basic hygiene techniques and how hard or easy it is to make.

Co-ordinator Margaret Brice said: “We have worked with Cargill Animal Nutrition, a local business from Dalton, who have created the recipe book as they wanted to give us an additional opportunity to raise funds.

“And a grant obtained through Hambleton District Council’s ‘Investing in Communities Fund’ has enabled us to print the recipe books.”

She added: “As we are a registered charity and run almost entirely by local volunteers we are also using the book to promote the services of Hambleton FoodShare and to raise funds for the service by hoping local residents will give a donation in return for a copy.

“It will make an ideal present for students about to go off to university who maybe having to shop and cook for themselves for the first time in their lives.”

Cook Smart will be available from Community House, 10 South Parade, Northallerton and at the Zion Church Hall every Wednesday between noon and 1.30pm for a donation of £3.
