THIRSK Action Group said record numbers attended its tenth Picnic in the Park event, raising funds for Action Medical Research and £1,000 for The Friarage MRI Scanner Appeal and £1,000 for Thirsk Clock.

An audience of around 2,500 danced to local band Citizen Smit as the new Paddington Bear was mobbed by excited children.

The audience was not deterred by rain, as 13-piece band Jake & Elwood Blues Brothers recreated the sounds of the hit film, before a performance by headline act JK as Robbie Williams and a fireworks finale.

The event was sponsored by The Darlington & Stockton Times, Steven J Dresser Electrical Contractors, Beechwood Leisure, Calverts Carpets, CB Furnishings, CJ PR, Todds Waste Management and Hillsprint.

Organiser Sue Calvert said: “We are looking forward to building up our following over the next few years and are already planning for 2016, which will be on July 9.

“We really appreciate such fantastic local support for Action Medical Research”.
