A GROUP dedicated to walking for health is planning to expand – and as a result needs new walk leaders.

Hambleton Strollers is expanding with the help of Hambleton Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group.

Walking has proven health benefits for many long term conditions such as high blood pressure, heart conditions, cancer, type two diabetes, depression and Alzheimer’s.

Experts say that if a medication existed which had a similar effect to physical activity, it would be regarded as a “wonder drug” or “a miracle cure.”

Hambleton Strollers run short walks in all the market towns across Hambleton. The walks are over flat ground, risk assessed and volunteer leader supported.

And scheme co-ordinator Paul Fisher said: “We want to increase our walks in Bedale and Thirsk to weekly walks as we have established that with a weekly date more people will walk with us and get the benefits associated with walking.

“To deliver weekly walks we need new walk leaders. We are looking for people who can spare three hours a month and would like to put something back into walking by helping others.”
