YOUNGSTERS at a North Yorkshire school enjoyed a very special music lesson this week.

Pupils from Carlton Miniott primary, near Thirsk, were visited by some of the UK’s best classical musicians.

Four players from the BBC Philharmonic orchestra spent a day at the school as part of the BBC Music project “Ten Pieces.”

The project was created by the BBC for primary school pupils and aims to open up the world of classical music to a generation of children.

Launched in 2014, the project was designed to act as a gatewaythro0ugh which children could learn more.

The orchestra’s general manager Simon Webb said: “We are the BBC’s orchestra in the North of England, and an important part of our role is to get out and about to share the music which we love with a new audience.

“It is a great privilege to do this and to hear what the children create in the space of just a few hours.”

Nearly half of the primary schools in the country are now engaged with the Ten Pieces project, which began with an immersive film introducing the 10 pieces of music.
