FUNDRAISERS are staging an off-road sponsored cycling event to enable a girl battling a rare cancer and her family to visit Disneyland Paris.

More than 120 cyclists, including an 83-year-old tandem rider, have already signed up to take on three, six, nine or 17-mile trails at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, on Sunday, March 22, after learning of the drive to give Gaby Alderson, of South Otterington, a dream holiday.

Since being diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in 2013, aged ten, Gaby has undergone numerous gruelling therapies, and has made huge strides towards being in partial remission.

Dawn Smith and a group of Sutton under Whitestonecliffe-based fundraisers, who have raised more than £23,000 towards relapse therapies for Gaby, said they hoped the £6,000 holiday would provide some escapism for the family.

Mrs Smith said: "Everybody has taken Gaby's battle to heart - if anything like that happened to me I would hope people would rally around."

The event, for which Sutton Bank Bikes is offering discounts on cycle hire, will be staged on racehorse trainer Kevin Ryan's gallops, on the Cold Kirby road near the national park visitors centre, from 11am to 3pm.
