A FORMER palliative care nurse is set to hold further Death Cafes, after a strong turnout at the first such event in North Yorkshire.

Since 2011, the non-profit Death Cafe movement - a concept to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their lives - has spread across Europe, North America and Australasia, with more than 1,300 events being held.

The aim is to create an informal environment to hold discussions relating to death, which usually take place in medical or religious settings.

Naomi Wood, of Sowerby, said she was delighted 15 people had attended the first event in Thirsk and said the conversations had been thought-provoking and fun.

She said: "It was great to have the opportunity to share our experiences openly and hear each others opinions.

"It was a very frank and open discussion which was also respectful and warmly received."

The next event will be held at the Quaker Meeting House, Kirkgate, Thirsk, on January 29, from 7pm to 9pm.
