NEARLY 400 pupils and staff at a primary school have created poppies for a remembrance wreath to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The Thirsk Community Primary School artwork, featuring poppies made out of a range of materials stitched together with black buttons, will be displayed for two weekends from Friday (November 7), at St Mary's Church, Thirsk.

Headteacher Richard Chandler said the project, which was led by school governor Ann Akers, had taken three weeks to complete and had involved children aged three to 11.

The materials and buttons used were all donated, keeping in the war time spirit of make do and mend.

Mr Chandler said: "The wreath is absolutely fantastic, when the children saw it completed there was a wow reaction.

"It has been a huge effort to coordinate, but it has focused the children's thoughts around remembrance and added extra significance to Remembrance Day with the centenary of the First World War."
